Vacationing June
Feels a bit funny to have a monthly summary post with nothing at all on my summary list! Nothing for June, since I was either on vacation or preparing for vacation or recouping from vacation the entire month. A great way to blow away one of the non-writing months of summer, that's for sure!

At least I've made some mental progress with 'Delarun' during the month, on sections 4 & 5. Found a neat way to tie section 5 more closely to the Geren books, and I might actually get Hileko to make an appearance in section 4. That will be fun, though I'm not sure if I'll be doing any more 'Delarun' writing before 2010.

As for July (and August) I've decided to keep my expectations low. I want to be able to get into the autumn writing season as soon as I can, and not be delayed by any unfinished large editing projects. So for this summer, I just want to focus on editing in 'Delarun' and Hope's Passage. Other than that, I'll be working on various art projects, which I'm sure will devour my time and limited energy quite nicely, once I actually get caught up enough to start them!

It does seem strange not to have a big long list from you this month. I am glad to hear that you had a wonderful time, though. As you said, it was a good way to pass the time. And you've been making some mental progress anyway.

Here's hoping for an early finish to summer.

I think that's the first 'list-less' month since I started these summaries, though December's list was quite short and combined with January.

Mental progress is a great thing, even if it seems to be everywhere except book 5!

Thanks! I'm looking forward to making another countdown ticker in a few weeks. =)

You are so incredibly organized with your writing! I am a very helter-skelter, stick-paragraphs-together when the time feels right sort of person. I wish a had that sort of cohesion.

Good luck with all your projects! Are you still posting on FictionPress?

Not as organized as it might look, or I'd like to be! I plan to write a short story and then launch into book 5 this autumn, but what may happen is that it will balk, and I'll be back to working on 'Delarun'--or worse, the Shado-novella will come roaring at me and bowl everything else over. ;)

I'm not 'planning' on putting anything new up at FictionPress, but I might surprise myself someday...

How did FictionPress work out for you, ultimately? I had an account (never used) there when I was sixteen, and was thinking of dumping all of my short stories and unifinished pieces back into that account. I think I am mostly concerned about plagiarism, copyright issues, etc.

It's a nice place to host stories because it's not as rule-throttled as Elfwood is/was (haven't kept abreast of the latest rule overhaul). And because it was pretty easy for family members who don't have an account at FictionPress to comment there.

Don't have to deal with waiting in a queue line to get things published, and I just this evening went and fixed a typo in 'Hope's Passge' due to some feedback I received today--can't easily do that at Elfwood either!

However, due to 'first publishing rights' anything posted there is considered 'published' and therefore less desirable to 'real' publishers. That, and the inability to limit who can view what I put up there to a select audience (as I do on LJ) is why I don't put stuff up there anymore. If I do, it would just be fluff like more poetry, gift dialogues or short pieces I don't plan to ever publish.

Let me know if you have any more questions! =)

Thanks for all the info! :)

The stories that I plan on throwing into that account are rough works, material that I do not plan on seeing published, or material that I *thought* was "publishable" and changed my mind about upon second or third reading(s). All of the "important" stuff is kept under lock and key and circulated only when I need feedback.

I think Elfwood has become stricter concerning non-sexual nudity in its art galleries; I'm not sure how the writing side of things is looking right now. I do recall a piece that I was trying to upload a few months ago that I simply gave up on due to the moderators' need to have every single non-English word translated, even when the meaning was obvious in the context of the sentence. And The Magician? I trimmed quite a bit in order to keep the dialogue clean. Not the end of the world; it was just annoying because 1.) The swearing was not gratuitous, 2.) It was in the character's nature to swear, and 3.) Given the circumstances of the story, I think I would have been swearing, too.

Ooh, that turned into a long rant. :) Bottom line is: if FictionPress gives me more freedom, I'm all for it. That, and the lack of "waiting in line" are huge selling points for me.

Then I think the place might be ideal for you. =)

Just give your piece a 'teen' rating or higher, and you won't have to worry about language. They don't moderate pieces there, though someone could report you if you rated it acceptable for young kids and it was extremely graphic. Don't have to bother with those stupid translation rules either.

The only thing I've found a bit sticky is that since it's set up to be automated rather than moderated, the publishing feature does tend to strip out anything unusual in your text. Like scene dividers that aren't the provided {hr} type, or any links. It's been a while since I last put something up, so my memory is a bit rusty now. While Elfwood erred to the side of over-regulating everything, sometimes with FictionPress I feel like I have to be a mind-reader because they hardly explain how to do anything!

(And let me know if you do start a page there, so I can 'friend' it =)

Will do!

I would much rather have things "under-regulated" than over-regulated. When it comes to writing, I am a bit of a control freak. I could not possibly co-write with someone: I would drive them insane! How much more, having to put up with the fine print of rules and the like. ;)

Joelle: Master-stone[info]shout_of_joy on July 3rd, 2009 12:30 pm (UTC)
There's no way I could co-write either. Not a chance!

Glad I could be of assistance! =)
